Universal Space Network Joins Google Lunar X PRIZE as Strategic Partner
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 13, 2007)—Universal Space Network, Inc. (USN), a leading provider of space operations and ground control and communications services is pleased to announce that it has formed a strategic alliance with the Google Lunar X PRIZE. USN will provide telemetry tracking and command (TT&C) services between the earth and the moon to the competing teams. USN is already providing similar services for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission scheduled for launch in late 2008.
As a strategic partner with the Google Lunar X PRIZE, USN will provide TT&C services at a substantial discount to standard commercial prices during the launch, trans-lunar orbit and initial 30-day roving phase of the mission.
The Google Lunar X PRIZE is an unprecedented international competition that will challenge and inspire engineers and entrepreneurs from around the world to develop low-cost methods of robotic space exploration. The $30 million prize purse is segmented into a $20 million Grand Prize, a $5 million Second Prize and $5 million in bonus prizes. To win the Grand Prize, a team must successfully soft land a privately funded spacecraft on the Moon, rove on the lunar surface for a minimum of 500 meters, and transmit a specific set of video, images and data back to the Earth and is open until December 31st 2012. Bonus prizes will be won by successfully completing additional mission tasks such as roving longer distances (> 5,000 meters), imaging man made artifacts (e.g. Apollo hardware), discovering water ice, and/or surviving through a frigid lunar night (approximately 14.5 Earth days).
"The Google Lunar X PRIZE calls on entrepreneurs, engineers and visionaries from around the world to return us to the lunar surface and explore this environment for the benefit of all humanity," said Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation. "We are confident that teams from around the world will help develop new robotic and virtual presence technology, which will dramatically reduce the cost of space exploration."
"USN is pleased to support the X PRIZE as a strategic partner," said Joe Rothenberg, USN President. We look forward to working with each of the X PRIZE teams and to support new technologies to expand space exploration."
